Vendor-specific Settings
One of the greatest things about today's desktop computing environment is that there is a huge selection of inexpensive, highly-sophicated hardware available to the end-user. As expected, the task of configuration becomes somewhat difficult due to the differing capabilities between different hardware vendors.
This page will assist you in making manual modifications to the Eyes-N-Ears initialization file (EANDE.INI) to make sure you are getting the most out of your hardware. In most cases, audio hardware will need little or no manual modifications, regardless of the vendor. However, video hardware configuration is a little more difficult, primarily due to the fact that there are several standard support mechanisms. Currently, most hardware vendors will provide for support for their hardware using either TWAIN, MCI, or VFW (Video for Windows®) technologies. Some manufacturers, such as Willow Peripherals, will actually provide support for all three technologies. This greatly enhances the flexibility of using their hardware.
With that in mind, most of this document will contain references to specific video hardware vendors. Please be sure to make a backup copy of the EANDE.INI file beforing attempting any modifications.
This image-capture card is probably one of the best cards on the market. Most of the development of the Eyes-N-Ears software was performed using this card. It is highly recommend for serious surveillance and security applications. Driver support for this card includes Windows® 95, Windows® 98 and Windows® NT. In addition, Willow provides support for MCI, VFW, and TWAIN. The software ships with an EANDE.INI file setting to support this card using the MCI drivers. You can set the following entries in the INI file for this card:
Driver Support | Section Name | Required Settings |
*MCI | [Willow] | Interface=MCI |
VFW | [Willow] | Interface=VFW SourceName=Willow VGA-CTV VFW Driver |
(* Recommended setting)
(** As an example of how to enter these settings for VFW support for the Willow card, you would enter the following information in the EANDE.INI file:
[Willow]
Interface=VFW
Source Name=Willow VGA-CTV VFW Driver
Make sure there is only one [Willow] section entry and be sure to save the file when you are finished. You will have to restart Eyes-N-Ears to activate this new setting. Please note that the section name must be enclosed in square braces [] for all vendor section names).
Creative Video Blaster WebCam II
This is probably one of the one popular, low-end image-capture cards on the market. Eyes-N-Ears was developed and tested using this card in both VFW and TWAIN operation. The best compatibility and performance was obtained using the VFW drivers. Therefore, this software ships with an EANDE.INI file setting to support this card using the VFW drivers. You will find the following entries in the INI file for this card:
Driver Support | Section Name | Required Settings |
*VFW | [WebCamII] | Interface=VFW SourceName=Creative Video Blaster WebCam II |
TWAIN | [WebCamII] | Interface=TWAIN SourceName=Creative Video Blaster WebCam II |
(* Recommended setting)
Additional information will be made available as more cards are tested with the Eyes-N-Ears software.
