Long Description | Coke Buddy is an Australian can and bottle identifier for Coca-Cola enthusiasts. It currently supports 55 different types of cans, bottles, and packs of cans and bottles of Coca-Cola, diet Coke and caffeine free diet Coke released in Australia. |
By providing one or two simple codes that are to be found on each of these products, Coke Buddy will return information on what the product is, and exactly where and when it was manufactured, information of which isn't clearly specified on the products' label. The program may be used to assist you in cataloguing your existing Coke can or bottle collection, or for the absolute purists among you, to assure you of the origin and freshness of the Coke you are about to drink. |
The two codes that Coke Buddy will accept are a product code and a date code: |
product code | Like with most other retail products, almost every Australian can, bottle and pack of cans or bottles of Coca-Cola, diet Coke and caffeine free diet Coke has a product code prominently featuring somewhere on its label, accompanying the actual barcode graphic itself. This number uniquely identifies the product, can be either 8 or 13 digits in length, and always begins with a 9 and a 3. For example, a 600mL PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle of Coca-Cola has the product code, 9-300675-009829. |
Date Code | Each of these cans and bottles also has a date code. Although often accompanied by other codes, a date code always begins with a letter, followed by 8, 9 or 10 digits, can often contain punctuation, and is to usually be etched or printed on the underside or bottom rim of a can, or on the neck or cap of a bottle. An example of such a date code is A0348 16:35. |
Instructions | To actually use Coke Buddy is quite self-explanatory, but to clarify: |
When the program is opened, an example product code and date code, based on the current time and date is already entered into the space provided. Delete the example in the usual way, enter in your own product code, date code or both, and Coke Buddy will return as much relevant information as is possible, based on the codes that you provide. There is no need to enter the codes in any particularly strict format, for Coke Buddy will just ignore any punctuation or any additional codes that it does not recognise. Hovering the mouse pointer over certain parts of the resulting output can often return further information. |

Development | Coke Buddy was written in the C++ programming language and compiled into a 32-bit Windows® application using Borland® C++Builder™ 3 Standard under Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition. It was then compressed to less than 40% of its original size using Markus F. X. J. Oberhumer's and László Molnár's The Ultimate Packer for eXecutables (UPX), version 1·03. |
