PmAs v1.0 - "Astronomy for the Presentation Manager"

by Cornelis Bockemuehl

PmAs is a set of astronomically oriented programs. It calculates positions of celestial bodies, times, risings and settings etc. and displays the results in table and/or graphic form, all nicely integrated in the Presentation Manager. Because of the modular architecture of the whole, more may be added easily and surely will be in the future.

I have been developing and using the different program modules for years already, but only now I decided to create a version for the public, with documentation, language support (german and english) etc. However, the whole thing is still "work in progress" and always will be probably, but those interested in astronomy are invited to visit my homepage, download the zipped archives and use them freely for private or scientific purposes:

http://www.datacomm.ch/cobo

You probably need a minimum background knowledge of astronomical terms and concepts if you want to make use of the whole package, but you might be interested to just use the graphics program which is specialized for the display of spherical data, together with the world map data set I included as an optional extension. (This is already provided anticipating the eclipse and occultation program(s) which are on the to-do list...).

Smart Windows V.0.82 - is available for download:

there are 3 different files:

this archive contains all the program files (327,445 Bytes)

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/smw082.zip

the documentation is here (168,277 Bytes of html and gif files):

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/smwd082.zip

In order to make the archive of the program files smaller I put the titlebar bitmaps in a separate file (324,168 Bytes):

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/smwb082.zip

smw082.zip include only few titlebar bitmaps and all window controls bitmaps. If you still have the old archive smw081.zip you can get the other titlebar bitmaps from there so you do not need to download smwb082.zip

the files should be available also here:

ftp://ftp.ghostbbs.ml.cx/pub/os2/os2team/alcant/

and soon in:

ftp://volftp.tin.it/pub/pc/os2/os2_2x/progs/desktop/

I'm sorry, this is not yet the registrable version, in any case a few bugs in the installer, preferences application and SMARTWIN.DLL have been corrected:

  1. In systems running at 256 colors, after the system palette was changed by some applications, the titlebar bitmaps weren't able to reset their colors. Now the bitmaps are refreshed and properly displayed as soon as the default system palette is reloaded and the window owning the titlebar gets the focus.
  2. In some cases, moving windows in rolled state, was preventing them to be unrolled later.
  3. In some cases, OS/2 and DOS command windows were disappearing from the screen when rolled and then unrolled.
  4. Titlebar and window controls were misplaced when unrolling maximized windows previously rolled, when the Override default size and position was set.
  5. The Automatic focus feature was preventing drop down menus to work correctly in seamless winOS/2 windows.
  6. The Move the pointer to the focus window feature has been improved.
  7. The Enable checkbox in the Functions controlled by the mouse dialog and in the Mouse mapping page now work as expected.
  8. The bug which prevented to set permanently negative positions for maximized windows has been removed.

You can install it over your previous 0.81 installation.
The program archive contains the full documentation in ASCII format.
The other archive (smwd082.zip) contains the same documentation in html format plus images.

I'm still working on the registrable version.
The time expiration will be removed and will be substituted by some kind of configuration limitation which will not in any case prevent the full test of the program.
The application will be renamed Styler/2 but the name of the program files will be left unchanged.

My homepage, is now at http://acsoft.ghostbbs.cx, but there is no file in the directory... I'll upload the files during next week.

The Windows Refund Center (http://www.thenoodle.com/refund/) is a new web site dedicated to information on how to obtain a refund for your purchase of Windows. The Windows End User License Agreements (EULA) allows anyone who buys a PC to get a refund for returning their copy of Windows.

February 15th has been declared "Windows Refund Day", when everyone who purchased a PC with Windows pre-installed, but never used Windows (i.e. immediately deleted it without booting it first) to demand a refund from their reseller.

This would be a great opportunity for OS/2 users to get some money back.

I found USB modem drivers -- at least for IBM and US Robotic's modems(same package) at:

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/universa/ibmcorpo/index.htm

Also it looks like updated USB Mouse and Keyboard drivers were posted on Jan 12. Although file dates are from November...

Unfortuneatly I could not find the Base USB package that it says is required in order to use any of these USB devices under OS/2...

Warpstock Inc., is pleased to announce that the bid forms, for those interested in hosting Warpstock 99, are now available. Proposals may be submitted for review starting February 1, 1999. The deadline for submission is March 1, 1999. Full details may be found at http://www.warpstock.org.

A host city announcement date has not be determined. This will be dependent upon the number of bids received so that time will be allowed to throughly review each proposal.

Warpstock 97 and Warpstock 98 were overwhelmingly successful and brought OS/2 users from around the world to what is now known as the OS/2 event of the year.

We look forward to selecting the new host city for Warpstock 99 and it's fun to watch the "child" grow with each passing year.

I contacted Lotus Development at 1-800-343-5414 and ordered the update for SmartSuite for OS/2. The cost was $19.95 plus shipping. Apparently there has been some confusion between update (for those who own V1.0) and upgrade (for those who don't). The upgrade price is $150.00 If you are interested in the update, be sure to specify update and not upgrade. That should clear any confusion.

This PM utility strips HTML codes from Web pages, leaving only the text and optionally the URLs. While the layout of tables and lists is lost during stripping, data is sorted to separate lines for legibility.

Install PMStripper as the HTML source viewer in WebX instead of the OS/2 system editor E, and you can use the Ctrl+V keystroke combination to load the web page source directectly into PMStripper. This will make it easier to cut and paste information or URLs from web pages. It can also be installed as the document source viewer in Netscape.

Registered users of PMStripper will have access to two additional executable files that were compiled with the 486 and 586 compiler options. These versions will offer some performance improvement for users with 468, Pentium, or equivalent CPUs.

Registration covers all 1.xx releases of PMStripper. If you have registered PMStripper and have not received an email notice of this update it is because your email address has changed. Send me a message with your old and new email address and I will update my mailing list.

New in PMStripper 1.20

Added support for saving drag & drop color and font changes made to the menubar. This should make the utility easer to use for OS/2 users with vision problems.

Fixed a bug in the naming of the profile file when the environment variable in the config.sys file is used to specify the location of the file.

IBM has released a new PCMCIA driver which complies with the PCMCIA level 5.0 standard (cardbus support). This is particularly relevant for all those who have a machine with cardbus PCMCIA socket which can not be set to PCIC mode, but it is of course also relevant for everyone else who uses a cardbus PCMCIA chipset.

This driver replaces the earlier SS2PCIC2 driver. It can be accessed from the driver page at the Notebook/2 Site:

http://www.os2ss.com/users/DrMartinus/notebook.htm

Please report any problems to me. I will then send a consolidated report to IBM.

The Enhanced E's have been updated to version 1.10

Changes include:

About the Enhanced E

The Enhanced E Editor is a 32 bit, multithreaded OS/2 PM text editor built with productivity in mind. Options once reserved for registered users are now available to everyone for a full taste of the editors capabilities. Here are a few examples of what the Enhanced E can do that you may not see somewhere else:

Save or print 'selected' text, save or append 'selected' text to a temporary file, time-date-name-signature file insert, spawn new session, extensive drag and drop (open files, save or rearrange text), configurable autoSave, large (user limited) file history, find by keyword or line #, presentation mode, text to IPF conversion, mime conversion, built-in code template tool (add to ours or build your own templates), plugin support (write your own plugins to work in the editor)...

There have been a great amount of changes in this version and already one item has been found that slipped through this mornings build. With the change in the file saving methods to rid ourselves of the end-of-file-char we were not saving any extended attributes on files that may have had them previously. This has been rectified already but if you have already downloaded the editor from our website today you should download this version again.

The W3C, Internet standards committee, just released Amaya 1.4a. Amaya is the name of W3C's own test-bed browser/authoring tool and is used to demonstrate and test many of the new developments in Web protocols and data formats. It is currently only available on Unix and Windows 95/NT.

Regarding the fact that there are more and more games available with sourcecode (Doom, Descent, Hexen, Heretic...) I've set up a mailinglist to support developers in porting games to OS/2.

I think it's bether to share the experience made with ports instead of working alone. If you want to join the list go to http://www.eGroups.com/list/game-ports and subscribe!

If you want to use MGL for OS/2 (http://www.scitechsoft.com) this may be a good place to share your experience about this library. Most of the games (I think) will use it as soon as it is available.
