NUT/2, the nice nutritional database that contains 5976 foods, has been updated! In this new port, based on version 4 for Unix, I included an installation script and I solved some little bugs. Now even users with XFree86/2 installed can run NUT/2 without problems!

New build is smaller than previous (520Kb vs 1.1Mb) so you'll download it faster ;-)

NUT/2 is Free-Cardware, so you don't have to pay to use it. Don't forget to write me to suggest any kind of change!

The NUT/2 homepage (ONLY in ITALIAN at the moment) is at:

http://www.quasarbbs.com/michele

and you can download new distribution from : QuasarBBS

or from Hobbes archive (now in /incoming)

Enjoy NUT/2 !

FP9 broke HPLJ6L printing (as well as others) from os/2 (but not win-os/2) programs e.g. wordpro.

A work around appeared: back out to FP8's pmmerge.dll, pmviop.dll, and pmviop.sym.

This works on my system. Thanks To Steen Kleis Sorensen for the post to bugs newsgroup.

Since I read the thought-provoking article "Will Digital Sound Speakers make sound boards obsolete?" at:

http://www.pcworld.com/pcwtoday/article/0,1510,7292,00.html

I wondered if this type of hardware would ever be supported by OS/2.

Well, it is!. You can now have high-quality sound _without_ a sound card by purchasing just a set of USB speakers that convert digital audio data sent over the usb bus to analog sound.

IBM quietly (as usual) released drivers for USB "Digital Speakers".

The drivers are available at:

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/os_2comp/labtec/index.htm

These drivers require the base usb support, downloadable from:

http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/os_2comp/usbbasic/index.htm

Those OS/2 users on a multi-platform network who need to access and run Win32, Unix or Mac applications from OS/2 now have a 100% FREE, open solution: VNC developed by Oracle at the ORL laboratory in the U.K., and released with full source code under the GNU General Public License.

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is a FREE, multi-platform remote display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment from anywhere on a TCP/IP network (your local lan, an intranet, or even the global Internet), and from a wide variety of machine architectures.

What makes VNC different from other commercial solutions is:

-It is small and simple. The Win32 viewer, for example, is about 150K in size and can be run directly from a floppy. No installation needed.

-It is truly platform-independent. A desktop running on a Linux or Windows 95 machine may be displayed on an OS/2 PC. Or a Solaris machine. Or any number of other architectures. There is also a Java viewer.

-It is sharable. One desktop can be displayed and used by several viewers at once.

VNC Servers and clients for win32, unix and macintosh have been available for some time from the official VNC homepage at:

http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/

The news is that an OS/2 user from Japan has ported the VNC client to OS/2 PM. Download it from the VNC Viewer for OS/2 PM homepage at:

http://www.sra.co.jp/people/akira/os2/vnc-pm/index.html

Current version is third alpha (alpha 0.03) of VNC viewer for PM.

I encourage everyone to try this, and also those brave enough to attempt to port the VNC _server_ to OS/2 too. (Which would give us a _free_ remote control solution of an os/2 desktop from another os/2 system, and also of OS/2 from Mac/Win32/Unix).

The author of this os/2 port is Akira Hatakeyama from Japan and reacheable at akira@sra.co.jp.

Last note: A really good introduction to VNC in RealVideo format is available at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/videos.html

Having supported CFGINFO in the last year I'm now proud to announce a new FREE application named CFGMAINT which hopefully has no more the bugs CFGINFO has. CFGMAINT was developed by Kai Evers, well known for mINI, IPT and other free programs. CFGMAINT has an updated database written by myself with all the new entries (e.g. JFS.IFS, USB-Drivers, and lots more) I've found or who have been mailed to me since the last months by users of CFGINFO.

CFGMAINT is in ver 0.92, does what CFGINFO has done and some more (e.g. sort config.sys, edit bootscreen, generate configuration files for boot options ...) and can be downloaded at:

http://www.buntspecht.de/cfgmaint

Thanks to all users of CFGINFO (and hopefully new users of CFGMAINT), and all who mailed me the bugs they had with CFGINFO for their patience.

The Command line Clipboard Access (CCA) programs are a set of shareware programs that allow the OS/2 user to access the OS/2 clipboard from the command line in a full screen or windowed OS/2 session.

These programs do not make any changes to the OS/2 INI files or create any additional files on your hard drives. To install them, just copy the two executable files to a directory in your OS/2 search path.

The shareware version of these programs are fully functional, but they add an identification line to the clipboard text.

New in Command line Clipboard Access 1.1

The functions of PMClip2.exe and Fclip2.exe have been combined into one program that is also called Fclip2.exe.

This should improve performance when getting data from the OS/2 clipboard.

If you download the new IBMKEYB.EXE from the IBM Device driver pack (http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html) you can set the undocumented switch /NUMLOCK, this turns numlock steadily to ON. Since Fixpack 8 (or even earlier) you can aslo select the dvorak keyboard layout in your keyboard configuration settings (in the systemconfiguration folder).

(Added January 30, 1999)

Dear users of OS/2: I've reported some days ago that the undocumented switch /NUMLOCK enables the number pad with the newest ibmkbd.sys (ver. 10.011) available at the os/2 driver pack. This message contains two errors.

1. the switch must be /NUMON, the other undocumented switches are /NONE and /NUMOFF. Posting this message the /NUMON turned falsly to /NUMLOCK I apologize for this error.

2. as this switch worked with my rather old (14 Years) keyboard I falsly thougt that it then should work with every keyboard and not only with some. Kovacs Istvan has mailed me some time ago that some hungarian users had told him that the switch /NUMON works with some older ibmkbd.sys drivers and some codepages but there is no rule if it works or not. With my old ibmkbd.sys out of the fixpaks the switch didn't work, but when I've downloaded the new ibmkeyb.exe and installed it my numlock led began to glow green during boot and stayed on, also the numberkeys are working. Looking into the new ibmkbd.sys I've found the mentioned switches, so I falsly thought that IBM has build in a general support for numlock via the /NUMON switch.

Sorry for my error, the rumour and the troubles you've might had.

I've been playing around with REXX and simple Internet tasks for a while, and figure I might as well announce what I've done with it.

The utilities currently only number two:

ngfetch.cmd - get list of newsgroups
urlget.cmd - get files via HTTP or FTP by URL

The former will retrieve groups with or without article number information.

The latter is primarily useful for grabbing files, but it will also store whatever information is sent from a HTTP URL, provided you give it a filename to store it as (CGI scripts, default indexes, etc.) The FTP is accomplished via REXX Sockets, not the REXX FTP library, so resumed transfers are supported.

Both utilties display transfer progress.

Object REXX is required, as is the RxSock.dll library.

DH-Grep-PM 1.05 has been released.

This PM version of grep is designed as a user friendly application. The often cryptic command line options have been replaced with easy to use menu selections. The output of the search is sent to a PM window and the user has easy access to all of the information that was found by the program. To reduce the overhead, the results are buffered until the search is completed and then displayed in the PM window.

New in DH-Grep-PM Version 1.05

Added 'Open Enter Search Parameters Immediately' option under 'Display'. This option causes the 'Enter Search Parameters' window to open when DH-Grep-PM is loaded.

Added support for saving drag & drop color and font changes made to the menubar. This should make DH-Grep-PM easier to use for OS/2 users with vision problems.

Made some minor changes to the online help and made a version of the online help with larger type available. The user will be prompted by the installation routine as to which version of the help file will be used. This should make DH-Grep-PM easier to use for OS/2 users with vision problems.

Hi All,

I just wanted to make a few points:

This release of SDD for OS/2 was clearly marked as Alpha and was not released publicly -- it was just released to those who formally signed up as testers.

As the announcement said, SciTech is very aware that there would be problems with this release, but we wanted to get into the hands of those hardy souls that would be interested in getting an early peek at the software.

Please post your comments about this pre-release product to the official channels. The best place to discuss the product is on the newsgroup SciTech created for pre-release versions:

news://news.scitechsoft.com/scitech.display.doctor.beta.

We're happy that there is so much interest in SDD for OS/2, but these public posts should be tempered with the fact that this was not a public release of the software. SciTech fully understands and expects that some users will encounter major problems when running this Alpha release. This should not reflect anything about the quality of the final release of the product.

Thanks to all those that are so interested in SDD for OS/2. Your patience will be rewarded.

Regards,

Tom Ryan --

Wanda is a program that allows you to create lots of little "sticky notes" on your OS/2 desktop, in which you can write down all kinds of valuable (or not so ...) information.

v0.75 is something of a pre-release which has still some small bugs and is also still missing lots of features that I would like the program to have (e.g. good documentation ;-)

Wanda is mailware.

Download it either from the homepage:

or from Hobbes:

I'm developing a game for OS/2 and Windows 95/98 called ERIC. It's a Boulder Dash clone, and I would love to get some feedback on how it works on different OS/2 and Windows configurations. I currently have a beta available for download on my website, which is located at:
