Introduction
Wordful is a word
puzzle game in the spirit of Scrabble®, Literati, eWords and others.
It is also a great way of learning new words or supporting the active
vocabulary in any language or science area.
In fact, here is what Wordful
it is:
Wordful
is fun
Although it will surely depend on your definition of fun, we invite you to
give it a try and see for yourself. There is always a way to get challenged.
Hollywood stars, baby names, mountains, states, business terms...there is
something for everyone!
Wordful
is great for learning languages
Knowledge is best built in games and Wordful is a great way to introducing
yourself to a new language while playing. Equally effective for children and
adults, the game even allows for tracking the results! Give yourself a try and
record your average time for finding a word. Play a week and compare...you
might be surprised!
Wordful
can be adjusted to your level or topic of interest
Use the various pre-created word lists or create your own ones with the free
Wordful
wordlist builder, available in a separate download. (currently only
available for Microsoft Windows)
Wordful
develops your brain and unorthodox thinking
Finding words, figures and patterns is a classic exercise for the brain.
Reading backwards forces your brain to work on a totally different gear, which
can be both relaxing and useful. Maybe not as relaxing as mountain hiking and
not as useful as building marketing plans...but sometimes that's actually what
is great about it, isn't it?
Installation
Wordful can be installed and played on
any device running Palm OS 3.0 or higher. The game may come in either ZIP
format ("Wordful.ZIP") or Windows executable format ("Wordful.EXE").
When using ZIP format, regardless whether under Mac OS, Windows or any other host
platform, the user must first extract the ZIP file contents and then locate
and install the program and data files.
The game itself has a single program file called
Wordful.prc.
The folder "Word lists", located in the same place where
the game file is, contains some word databases that come with the game,
eventually organized by languages, topics etc.
Any number of word lists can be installed at a time on the
device.
It is very likely that there will be more word databases
available for download on the
game home
page. You can expect them to be free.
Playing
Upon the start of each new game, words from the currently
active word database are placed randomly on the board. Depending on the
selected difficulty setting, they can be aligned horizontally, vertically or
diagonally, as well as straightforward or backwards (e.g. right to left).
To select a word, tap on its first letter and drag the pen
to the last one.
One thing that needs to be understood is that any word on
the field corresponds to a word in the underlying database. It is often
possible that the letters from the words on the board align in a way that
other real words appear, especially some short 3 and 4 letter words. These
will not be recognized by the game if the user selects them, even though they
are indeed valid. The same applies for composite words such as "starship" or
"homeowner". If the original word from the database was "homeowner", then
homeowner then this is what the game will want back as input, not home
nor owner.
The minimal word length in Wordful is 4
letters.
Once the game starts, the board with words is displayed and
a counter starts to count time. The game measures the time it takes you to
find an actual word and displays it in the upper right corner of the screen
("S/W" is for "seconds per word"). The lower this indicator, the better player
you are and the better your vocabulary is.
To discourage wild guessing, the game introduces penalties
for every incorrect word guess. Because of the above said this may sometimes
be frustrating as even a real word from the database may not be accepted (if
actually result of a random letter alignment).
Wordful has a neat
feature, allowing each selected word to be automatically copied to the
device's clipboard. This allows for a quick lookup for its meaning in a
resident dictionary such as
BDicty Dictionary Reader.
This is especially useful if you want to expand your vocabulary as it may
often happen to correctly guess a word, but not have a clue what it means. The
ability to look it up in an external dictionary comes right in place (of
course at the price of losing average time for finding words).
Registration
If you have downloaded the
game from Internet or other place different than retail store, it will be
usually not be registered and will remind you to register it upon each new
game.
Unregistered games display a
registration prompt every time a new game starts. If you do not see such
prompt, then you do not need unlocking key, but you may still want
to register your copy of the game if you have ordered it from a retail store.
The registration key can be
obtained online from the product's page at
PalmGear.
