Introduction
The Heart Attack Survival Calculator provides an instant assessment
of the probability of surviving an acute myocardial infarction
(commonly called heart attack). The probability calculation is
derived from a statistical disease model,
developed by MediQual, which is based
on twenty-one different independent variables. Initially, the
Heart Attack Survival Calculator is calibrated for normal values,
assuming a patient is sixty years old. If the patient's age is
changed, the normal values will automatically adjust.
How to navigate
The Survival Calculator is designed like many web applications.
Two buttons - CALCULATE and RESET - generate results and clear
them. Underlined blue text is linked to supporting information
pages for your convenience. All information pages have a navigation
bar at the top for easy reference. To enter data, click on the
appropriate box to enter numbers or press the space bar to mark
a check box. On most browsers, the Tab key will move your cursor
from box to box.
How to calculate
To begin a calculation, click the RESET button to move the
cursor to the Age box under Patient History. Begin by entering
the patient's age in years (the default is set at 60). Hit the
Tab key to move to the next box. Continue to enter values or mark
check boxes until all patient data has been entered. Click on
the blue section headers if you need definitions or other assistance.
If you lack complete data, like a missing lab result, simply use
the displayed normal value. Click the CALCULATE button and the
probability of survival will be instantly displayed.
To modify your calculation, enter a new value in a box and click
CALCULATE for a new result. Click RESET to restore normal values
for a new calculation.
Some tips
- Enter values only if they differ from the default (normal)
values displayed.
- Some variables increase the probability of survival, although
most do not. See disease model for a
listing.
- The most reliable results are derived from exam and lab test
data obtained within the first forty-eight hours of hospitalization.
- If your patient data is incomplete, you can still use the
Survival Calculator. You can also calculate an interim score at
any time.
- If you have several values for the same test during the first
forty-eight hours of admission, select the most abnormal value
(the highest or lowest depending on the rules listed in the details
for each section).
