Release Notes

NCSA Mosaic v2.1.1 for Microsoft Windows ™

NCSA Mosaic is a Win32 application. NCSA Mosaic is capable of running under Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.1x and Windows for Workgroups. Windows 95 and Windows NT are 32-bit operating systems that are designed to run Win32 applications. Windows 3.1x and Windows for Workgroups(WfW) 3.1x are 16-bit operating systems that need a 32-bit subsystem called Win32s installed before running Win32 applications.

NCSA Mosaic version 2.1.1 released on March 25, 1996 as a maintenance release to addresses with v2.1.0. These problems include:

Version 2.1.0 adds a few new features such as the Kodak Photo CD technology and client side image maps. This release also represents a compiler upgrade. We went from Microsoft's VC++ 2.2 to VC++ 4.0. With VC++ 4.0 we are once again capable of building a release for Windows NT for the MIPS, Power PC and DEC aXP. Unfortunately we do not have a DEC machine and won't be able to compile an aXP release of NCSA Mosaic. The MIPS and the Power PC versions are available from our ftp server.

NCSA Mosaic has always been and will always be a freely available World Wide Web browser. NCSA Mosaic is freely available for individual, academic, United States Government, and internal business use. NCSA Mosaic is copyright by the University of Illinios and can not be commercially distributed with out a license.

NOTE: The Kodak Photo CD Technology is only available for Win3.1x, WfW3.1x, Win95 and WinNT(Intel).

Win32s Update Information

What is Win32s?

Win32s is a subsystem created by Microsoft for the Win 3.1x and WfW 3.1x 16-bit operating systems. The Win32s libraries allow Win3.1x and WfW 3.1x users to run Win32 (32-bit) applications on their 16-bit operating systems. Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) allows Mosaic to use its Client Communication Interface (CCI) to communicate with other applications.

Windows NT Users and Window 95 Users

Do not install Win32s! These operating systems are 32-bit operating systems with OLE support built-in.

Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups Users

The Latest Release of Win32s with OLE is v1.30c. You can also find a copy of v1.30c on our ftp server in the /Mosaic/Windows/Win31x/Win32s directory. We recommend all Windows 3.1x users upgrade to this latest version. If you are not sure which version of Win32s you have on your system, the version number can be found in the /windows/system/win32s.ini file. If your version is earlier than 1.30.172 you should upgrade.
